Google has begun dynamically expanding its AI-generated Overviews for some search queries, placing longer, synthesized answers at the top of the search results and pushing organic links further down the page. Search Engine Land reporter Barry Schwartz first reported the change, noting that this behavior can replace the truncated AI Overview with a full detailed response and alter how users interact with search results.

According to the Search Engine Land story, Google told reporters that “For some queries, AI Overviews may dynamically expand for topics where our systems determine it’s most useful for people.” This dynamic expansion can remove the “Show more” button and present a fuller AI answer by default — a change that already resembles the broader AI Mode experience Google has been rolling out.
Where featured snippets and short summaries once gave users a taste of answers, these expanded AI Overviews provide a more complete synthesis up front. The practical consequence is straightforward: users may get the information they need without clicking through to other websites, which can depress click-through rates for publishers and change the distribution of organic traffic.
As Jay Peters of The Verge observed, the new behavior can affect usability: “It can lead to a lot of scrolling,” adding a UX dimension to how expanded overviews reshape the results page. Google also says the expansion cancels if users have already begun scrolling past the Overview so they don’t lose their place.
First, inclusion in AI Overviews is not strictly a traffic win — it may raise visibility but reduce clicks. That said, being cited within an AI Overview can bolster perceived authority and brand recognition. Focus on these priorities:
These recommendations are practical starting points to adapt to expanded AI Overviews.
Identify pages driving organic traffic that are at risk (top-ranking pages, high-impression but low-CTR pages). Ensure each page has a concise summary paragraph near the top, clear H2/H3 structure, and explicit data points or quotes that an AI could credibly cite.
Implement schema.org markup for articles, FAQs, reviews, and product data. Structured data improves the chance that Google understands context and sources authoritative elements from your page.
Beyond rankings, monitor impressions-to-click ratios, organic CTR, pogo-sticking (if trackable), on-page engagement, assisted conversions and revenue attribution. Compare performance for queries that return AI Overviews versus those that don’t.
Run controlled tests on title tags, opening paragraphs, and FAQ content to see whether concise rewrites improve inclusion in AI Overviews and long-term engagement. Use A/B testing where possible and time-box experiments.
Since AI Overviews can satisfy informational intent without clicks, strengthen channels that don’t rely solely on organic click-throughs: email lists, social profiles, branded search ads, and content that drives deeper engagement on-site.
Advertisers should expect shifts in click volumes for informational queries. Consider testing remarketing and intent-driven audiences to capture users who consumed an AI Overview but remain convertible. Evaluate bids for high-intent keywords and monitor CPC inflation on conversion-focused queries if CTR drops elsewhere.
Additionally, prioritize ad copy and landing pages that demonstrate credibility quickly — the same concise, authoritative signals that help content be cited by AI Overviews also drive better ad performance.
Google’s dynamic expansion of AI Overviews is another incremental step toward a search experience centered on synthesized answers. For site owners and marketers, the goal is not to chase clicks alone but to make content authoritative, structured, and immediately useful. By doing so, you increase the chance that your content is both cited in these AI-generated summaries and remains a valuable channel for conversions.
