Search Engine Land reported on August 28, 2026 that Google is “dynamically expanding AI Overviews for some queries,” a change Barry Schwartz says can replace the usual “Show more” snippet with a fuller response that pushes organic links down the page. As Barry Schwartz wrote in Search Engine Land, “For some queries, AI Overviews may dynamically expand for topics where our systems determine it’s most useful for people.”

Instead of showing a short AI Overview with a “Show more” control, Google is testing automatically loading a fuller, expanded answer for certain queries. The expanded view can display an “Ask anything” prompt and occupies enough vertical space that traditional organic results are pushed lower on the page. The expansion is dynamic: if a user has already scrolled past the Overview, Google cancels the automatic expansion so the reader doesn’t lose their position.
Google told Search Engine Land the change is triggered where its systems determine the longer response will be most useful. The company framed the test as a usability improvement: “Our research has shown that with this dynamic experience, users find Search more helpful and engage deeper in follow-up exploration,” the spokesperson told Search Engine Land.
Independent sites tracking the test report intermittent behavior and limited public disclosure. As MLQ.ai noted, “The behavior is intermittent in early tests, and Google has not disclosed its percentage of affected searches.” That lack of scope means the commercial impact is measurable but currently uncertain.
The obvious effect is fewer clicks. Earlier research links AI summaries to reduced publisher referral traffic: summaries often satisfy user intent without a click. An automatically expanded Overview increases the chance the user never gets to the organic links, especially on narrow informational queries. For advertisers, expanded AI content can reduce above-the-fold real estate for paid placements, potentially lowering visibility and click-through rates.
SEOteric recommends a data-first, test-and-measure approach. Start with instrumentation and then adapt content and paid strategies. Here are five specific, measurable steps:
Combine query-level monitoring with regular traffic-reconciliation: tie Search Console exposure and analytics engagement to revenue or conversion outcomes. If traffic falls but conversions hold steady, the change may be cosmetic; if conversions fall, prioritize recovery tactics like targeted paid campaigns, content refreshes, or conversion-focused landing pages.
Consider diversifying acquisition channels and building audience-first assets (email, direct, social) that don’t rely solely on search clicks. Invest in brand-first content that encourages engagement beyond a quick answer. Also assess whether to use Google Search Console’s generative settings — for sites that prefer to avoid being used in generative features, Google announced an opt-out control in Search Console; weigh the trade-offs carefully (opt-out reduces generative exposure but may reduce implied visibility in AI features).
