OpenAI appears to be testing a new ad format that launches AI-powered business agents inside ChatGPT instead of sending users to a traditional website, a development first reported by Anu Adegbola on Search Engine Land. As Adegbola writes, “This model flips that paradigm. The conversation, not the website, becomes the destination.”

Based on the Search Engine Land report, the workflow for these chatbot-native ads centers on three components: automated business profiling (where ChatGPT crawls a company site to generate context and common questions), business agent creation (advertisers configure a Custom GPT-style agent using product feeds, Model Context Protocol tools and lead forms), and agent-powered campaigns (ads that open a conversation with the business agent rather than directing traffic to a URL).
The shift from landing pages to conversational destinations affects nearly every stage of the funnel. For advertisers, it promises higher engagement through personalized, real-time responses and shorter paths to conversion. A user can ask a question, get a product recommendation, and complete a purchase or book an appointment — all within the chat experience.
At the same time, this model raises practical and strategic questions: how will advertisers measure performance when clicks no longer lead to web pages? How do you capture and store leads generated in conversations? And how will product feeds and live data integrate with the agent to keep recommendations accurate?
Traditional metrics such as click-through rate (CTR), time on page, and bounce rate capture less of the user journey when the conversation is the destination. Instead advertisers should focus on conversational outcomes: lead qualification rate, appointment completions, items added to cart via chat, and conversation-to-sale conversion rates. Instrumentation should capture structured events from the chat, and teams should map conversational paths to desired business outcomes.
Chatbot-native ads will process user inputs in real time. That makes consent, disclosure, and secure data handling essential. Integrations with CRMs or analytics systems should use secure, auditable channels, and marketers must ensure compliance with applicable regulations like GDPR and CCPA.
As Digiday’s coverage pointed out, these systems are technically complex. “Building an ads manager isn’t just a UI problem,” said Shirley Marschall (Digiday), underscoring the breadth of issues — from measurement to fraud prevention — advertisers must plan for.
Even while ChatGPT Ads Manager remains in early testing, there are practical steps teams can take today to prepare for chatbot-native ad formats:
If conversations become first-class destinations, the role of websites and SEO may evolve rather than disappear. Websites will remain critical as authoritative sources that feed the business profile and as landing destinations for more complex conversions. Ensuring your site’s structured data, FAQs, and product feeds are discoverable and correctly formatted will improve the quality of any agent built from that content.
OpenAI’s chatbot-native ad tests point to a future where the ad experience and the customer experience converge inside conversational interfaces. For marketers, that means shifting priorities: from optimizing for page visits to optimizing for conversational outcomes, from collecting form fills to capturing structured chat events, and from static landing pages to dynamic, integrated data feeds.
