The recent rollout of Google Search Console platform properties gives SEO teams a new lens on how social and video content contribute to search visibility. Lawrence Hitches outlined the opportunity in Search Engine Land, arguing that SEO teams should build a “social topical map” to connect website content, videos, and social posts to the same search demand. This shift enables measurement and strategy across formats, not just isolated pages.

Platform properties let you connect YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and other platform accounts to Search Console and see the Google Search queries where that content appears — impressions, clicks, and positions. That visibility exposes a large volume of search eligibility that previously lived in a blind spot. As Google Search Central described the update, “platform properties are globally available to everyone,” and the guidance shows how to analyze social and video performance in Search Console.
Hitches’ testing showed how platform property exports surface clusters of search demand that individual query views hide. For example, many distinct phrasings of “enterprise seo” together produced tens of thousands of impressions even though no single variant would appear on a typical keyword shortlist. Hitches writes that the social topical map helps teams visualize the interconnectedness of content themes, which can lead to more strategic content creation and improved search visibility.
“The social topical map helps you plan for that reality by connecting your website, videos, and social content to the same search demand.” — Lawrence Hitches, Search Engine Land
Start by connecting every platform account you control in Search Console and exporting the query data once you have a few weeks of coverage. Group phrasings into clusters and triage clusters into Optimize, Embed, or Produce:
Then build the social topical map by combining the platform query clusters with traditional keyword research and trend signals. Organize the output by topic cluster (not platform) and map which format(s) best serve each facet of intent: long-form video, short-form clips, carousels, or in-depth articles.
1) Audit and connect platform properties: verify YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and X in Search Console and export the Insights reports to gather query clusters.
2) Prioritize packaging fixes: for assets in positions 4–20 with impressions, test revised titles and thumbnails before producing new material.
3) Embed video on matching pages: where a video already answers search intent, embed it on the site page so page and video reinforce each other for the cluster.
4) Produce format-matched content: map intent to format—how-to clusters to short clips, comparison or evaluation to long-form video, and data-led topics to visual carousels or threads.
5) Measure and repeat: platform properties create a feedback loop. Each new placement generates more query data to refine the map.
“Understanding platform properties allows SEO teams to better attribute content performance and user interactions across multiple channels, creating a unified view that supports more informed decision-making.” — Google Search Central (developers.google.com/search/blog, July 29, 2026)
Adopting a social topical map changes how teams plan and measure. Rather than treating social, video, and web teams as separate silos, the map makes topic clusters the unit of strategy. This improves resource allocation: one topic can generate an article, a long-form video, and several short clips that all serve the same demand. It also mitigates the zero-click conversation by showing where impressions exist even without clicks, and where packaging can restore traffic.
Google’s platform properties and Hitches’ social topical map together create a practical methodology for multi-format organic visibility. Start small with one topic cluster: connect accounts, export queries, cluster phrasings, and run packaging tests on the highest-impression assets. Use the data to systematize content briefs across formats, and scale the process into a repeating editorial cycle that compiles insights into a living topical map.
